ELECTRONIC STABALIZED PLATFORMS (ELSP) MAKE IT SMOOTH SAILING FOR U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS MEMPHIS DISTRICT

(Lafayette, LA)- The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), a major Army command with a broad set of missions and capabilities, has called on the expertise of internationally-known SOLA Communications, L.L.C. (SOLA), inventor of the unique Electronic Stabilized Platforms (ELSP), to support them in providing quality, responsive engineering services to the nation.

In conjunction with their river management and improvement programs, USACE, through several of their district offices, has purchased a number of SOLA's Electronic Stabilized Platforms (ELSP), an electronically controlled motion compensation antennae system for use on floating structures. This system assists the USACE in a variety of civil works projects such as Navigation, Flood Control, Environmental Protection, Disaster Response, etc.
USACE's Memphis District recently purchased two ELSP for use in maintaining communication on two separate vessels. One of these, the "Dredge Hurley", is a 300' - 6" long x 58' - 5" wide x 56' tall vessel, operating 24/7 from June through November. This vessel is tasked with the mission of maintaining from Mississippi river mile 599 to 954, to a depth of 9 feet and 300 feet in width.
"We are honored to partner with the USACE Memphis District and support them in their mission of providing flood control, navigation, environmental stewardship, other authorized civil works, military programs support and emergency operations," said Gordon Rice, President of SOLA. "More specifically, we are happy to provide all of their communications needs and look forward to working with them on future projects."

The Memphis District's other vessel, the "Motor Vessel Mississippi", serves a dual function, capturing SOLA's communications support in multiple facets. It serves as an inspection vessel for the Mississippi River Commission each spring and fall. The commission conducts a series of public meetings aboard the vessel at various river communities. It also serves as a towboat during the revetment season (mid July to the end of November), responsible for the movement of a variety of floating plant and barge loads of articulated concrete mattress in association with revetment operations
Fully automated via computer, the ELSP system minimizes operator intervention and/or human error. This unique antennae system automatically acquires and tracks the targeted satellite and utilizes a non-critical balanced technique, negating problems such as initial balancing and long-term mechanical balance stability.
