LOUISIANA HORSEMEN JOIN EFFORT TO RAISE MONEY FOR HURRICANE RELIEF FUND

(Opelousas, LA) - The pot for a benefit event initiated by Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino in Opelousas, Louisiana just got larger with an announcement from Louisiana horsemen involved in the racing industry. The racing operation is donating 100% of its revenues from Sunday's, September 4th, racing program to the Acadiana Chapter of the Red Cross Relief Fund with a special night of thoroughbred and quarter horse racing beginning at 6:45 p.m.

The horsemen are contributing their share of the revenue from Sunday evening's program. "The Louisiana thoroughbred and quarter horse owners, trainers and breeders have risen to the occasion," said Sean Alfortish, President of the Louisiana Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association. "Racing is a team effort and this is just another example of how we can work together."

The event, which is drawing national attention, is an effort to generate cash for the relief effort due to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. "The racing industry in Louisiana is forever changed," said Alfortish. "The New Orleans area is a huge part of our racing economy and our racing family. We want to do everything we can to ensure the safety and comfort of our fellow Louisianians."

The benefit goes nationwide through the Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino simulcast network. "Simulcast networks from throughout the United States are coming on board," said Howard. "The response from the hundreds of facilities that carry our racing program has been overwhelming."

The Sunday night benefit is open to the public at the facility in Opelousas as well. "No bet will be too small or too large," said Howard. "
