Evangeline Downs to Revamp Racing Surface
Scheduled Reopening set for June 30

Opelousas, Louisiana - Officials at Evangeline Downs announced this morning plans to overhaul the racing surface and have set a projected opening date for the racetrack of June 30. The Race Track will meet today, at noon in Opelousas, with the Louisiana State Racing Commission to set forth its plans. A private meeting will follow at 1:00 p.m. with representatives of the Louisiana H.B.P.A. and the Jockey's Guild followed by an open forum at 2:00 p.m. for licensed horsemen and racing personnel only.

"We are disappointed to have suspended racing on May 12th and thereafter," said Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Swain. "We evaluated both short-term and long-term solutions but believe it is in everyone's best interest to make repairs to ensure, without a question, the best possible permanent solution. Immediately following the suspension of racing on May 12, we peeled the racetrack back to its foundation. We found the base to be solid and intact but also found variations in the levels of the base that must be corrected immediately. For the last 48-hours we have met with our consultants, industry experts, the Louisiana State Racing Commission, Louisiana H.B.P.A. and the Jockey's Guild to formulate a plan for correcting these issues. We are committed to apply the appropriate resources to create a permanent long-term solution."

To this end, Evangeline Downs has retained Dennis Moore as our consultant. Dennis is a world renowned track expert and he brings a lifetime of experience in racing surfaces development. Mr. Moore, a second generation Track Superintendent, currently serves in that capacity at Hollywood Park in California. Additionally, he has served as an advisor or developer at racetracks and training facilities throughout North America including Sam Houston Race Park, Remington Park, Lone Star Park, Ruidoso Downs, San Luis Rey and The Woodlands.

"We are pleased to have the services of Dennis Moore," said Swain. "His credentials are well respected by all in the industry. He has worked with our current Track Superintendent Ron Collier in the past and together they will make the necessary modifications required to put these issues behind us once and for all and to allow us to move forward and concentrate on the business of racing."

Louisiana H.B.P.A. President Sean Alfortish met with Evangeline Downs officials on Tuesday evening to review the track's plans. "While I am disappointed that racing has been suspended, I am encouraged that Evangeline Downs has made a commitment to improve the condition of the track," said Alfortish. "This will insure long-term stability for the horsemen and jockeys."
