Personalized Job Search Assistance in Acadiana Is Alive and Well

(Lafayette, La.) - Opinions about job search are often biased toward ‘a glass half empty,’ particularly by naysayers who want you to believe that you’re in trouble if you’re a professional in between jobs. Stories of difficulties in the job hunting process and a supposed lack of services to help you are everywhere in the blogs and even in the mainstream media.
But should you listen to them, or tune them out?  Does this apply to us here in Acadiana?
The reality is right now there is good reason to see job search as ‘better than a glass half full,’ with great options for finding assistance with your search. If you’re hearing and seeing news that troubles you about fewer options for job search help, there is another side to this story, and it’s a far more inspiring one!
One instance of reporting is from a source considered one of the most influential news publications, The Wall Street Journal.  In February of this year, WSJ ran an article titled “Assistance for Laid-Off Workers Gets Downsized.” The premise of the article is that professionals who have lost their jobs no longer receive effective job search assistance in severance packages from their ex-employers. Companies often assist newly laid off workers in their initial job search period with “outplacement” services when they must let them go. Outplacement services are delivered by an industry comprised of a variety of providers, from large corporate concerns to “boutique” firms, all of whom offer clients their particular blend of tools and coaching.
Outplacement providers offer job search and career transition tools to two potential client groups: 1) corporations and their human resources departments, and 2) individual job seekers who want to invest in assistance. Although the WSJ article supports outplacement services as being valuable to employees in transition, it also states that some players in the outplacement industry are using cheaper methods like internet-only, virtual assistance.
According to the WSJ, emails and online tutorials have replaced personalized attention to candidates. The companies utilizing these low-cost ways of delivering services tend to be large-scale corporations which must scale down their services to meet their board expectations for profit margin.
Job searchers featured in the article lament outplacement providers who give them few hours of service, reduced to a phone call or two, limited online sessions, and a quick resume’ review. The services provided by these corporations, in particular, are not remotely customized to meet individual or specific marketplace needs.
They are one-size-fits-all packages.  And if you are a one-size-fits-all kind of person, these methods may work fine for you.
This entire news slant can scare the interviewing suits off of highly experienced executives and professionals at all levels who are in transition. But it need not be this way. There is good news:
Not all outplacement services are created equal.   There are options for ‘one-size-fits-one – YOU
All cities and towns along the I-10 corridor are enjoying high hiring activity due to the current pace of America’s thriving oil and gas exploration. From Houston to New Orleans, there are solid financial centers as well as well as thriving medical centers.
Acadiana is a perfect destination for many. With an entrepreneurial, independent culture alive with French Acadian / Creole “joie de vivre,” we enjoy a solid professional culture of oil and gas, technology, medicine, education and law.
The classic outplacement firms who have experienced, dedicated Career Coaches  will tell you the outplacement scare is just not warranted. According to them, outplacement coaching and candidate job search are alive and well, if you know where to look.
So, should you be cynical and believe that there is no longer “something in Acadiana” for you in your job search?” Absolutely not.
Should you give up on your job search in today’s post-recession economy? Not on your life.
Are you convinced that there are no services here to help you in your search?  You needn’t be.
You still have great and personalized job search options here in Acadiana.  If you reach out to them, they’ll reach back.
