Lots of New Traffic at Louisiana Yearling Sale Set for Tomorrow

(West Monroe, La.) – Consignors are reported excellent traffic today and are very busy showing yearlings to several prospects, many of them first-timers to the Breeders Sales Company of Louisiana, Inc. sale. The sale is set for 11:00 a.m. CT, tomorrow, at the Ike Hamilton Center in West Monroe, Louisiana. The Breeders Sales Company of Louisiana, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association.

Trainer, Bret Calhoun, arrived just after the Keeneland sale. “It’s a good book and I found a good group for several clients,” said Calhoun. “I thought this would be a good spot to come next after Keeneland.”

Calhoun consistently ranks among the top trainers in the country.  Calhoun is known for his candor, his ability to choose young talented horses, and his accessibility.  He has trained multiple stakes winners including Cactus Ridge and Mr. Nightlinger.

Calhoun cited a market that has a higher demand than supply as a reason for making the trip. “I wasn’t able to get everything I wanted at that sale,” said Calhoun. “The market’s pretty tough and I wanted to shop where we had not been before.”

Pike Racing is a family affair. Al and Sally Pike have been in the business for 30 years. Daughter, Chelsea, is here for as a first time pinhooker. “We’ve been coming to the sale for years,” said Al Pike. “Our main business is pinhooking and we are looking for good horses for ourselves and clients.”

The Pikes, originally from Weatherford, Texas, recently relocated to Lafayette, Louisiana from Ocala, Florida. “Lafayette is centrally located for the breeding and racing business in Louisiana,” said Pike.

Consignor, Beth Deal, from Inside Move has been very busy and said, “there is a lot of new traffic that has not been here before.” “The market has been up,” said Deal. “There are some really nice horses here and I expect it to be a good sale.”

Ronny Werner, who spends his time between Louisville, Kentucky and New Orleans, Louisiana, had quite a few yearlings picked out already. “There are some good horses here,” said Werner. “The Louisiana bred program is a plus because you can make good money in Louisiana bred races.”

Werner is well known for his work with two year-olds. Some of the top horses trained by Werner include Most Feared, Awesome Humor and Badge of Silver and Guadalupe High.

All accredited Louisiana bred foals of 2012 auctioned in this year’s sale are eligible for the Bayou State Bonus. Any such colt/gelding sold in this sale winning the 2014 Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile, the 2015 Crescent City Derby, and the 2015 A.L. “Red” Erwin Memorial Stakes will receive a $100,000 bonus at the completion of the final race. Any such filly sold in this sale winning the 2014 Louisiana Champions Day Lassie, the 2015 Crescent City Oaks, and the 2015 Elge Rasberry Memorial Stakes will receive a $100,000 bonus at the official completion of the final race.

The bonus paid will be added to the earnings of the winning horse and paid to the owner of the horse after the official completion of the final race. For the first time ever, Sittin At The Bar, won the $100,000 Bayou State Bonus in a dead heat finish at Harrah’s Louisiana Downs on Saturday.

The sale can be viewed via a web-cast on the louisianabred.com website beginning at 11:00 a.m. CT.

Breakfast will served from 8:00 am – 10 am tomorrow morning in the barn area of the Ike Hamilton.
