Our State Is #1 and It Is Not In Football

(Lafayette, La.) - September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Louisiana has just been declared the fattest state in the country according to a recent report from the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Foundation. The adult obesity rate in Louisiana is 34.7% and for kids aged 10-17 the rate is 35.9%. Obesity affects 17% of all kids and adolescents in the United States - triple the rate from just a generation ago.

Louisiana lifestyles and bad eating habits, as well as the convenience of fast foot meals are at the forefront of the epidemic, not to mention the dominance of screen time versus time at play or sports. In Louisiana, our obsession with cooking and family gatherings focused around eating contribute to the overall pattern of unhealthy habits. Fried and fatty foods, anything over rice, boudin and cracklins, and baked goodies unfortunately are mainstays at company events, snack time and parties.

Football season brings added opportunities for cheating on our diets and exercise regimen. The "Who Dats" of Sunday afternoon put little emphasis on calorie counting, and much more focus on beer, gumbo, barbecue, and hors d'oeuvres.

Experts in the medical field say that another contributing factor in the climb to the top of the fattest state list is the disregard for the importance of regular exercise. It is past time for society to recognize that the population is growing in size, that is, at the waistline, and start being proactive in fighting the obesity epidemic. What can you do to help with the problem?

At Boulet Physical Therapy and Wellness Institute, our physical therapists can evaluate overweight or at risk individuals for a wellness program. We can look at problem areas and tailor a wellness exercise program specific to each individual's needs. An initial consultation can be scheduled by calling our office at 337-264-9856 and it is free of charge.

In order to fight the battle against childhood obesity, let us all start by building awareness about the problem. One way to do this is to start sharing knowledge with friends and family. Use social media to post low calorie, healthy recipes that you make at home, but are not time consuming. Share an article about exercise or stretching. You can promote sales at local businesses on sports gear, exercise clothes, and shoes. There are also many free smart phone apps that will allow you to count your steps or cumulative calories each day.

As parents and caregivers, you make a big difference in what your children think and do. You are role models for your family. Eating right and being active can help you maintain a healthy weight. When your kids see you making these choices, there's a good chance they will do the same.

There is no simple or single solution to the childhood obesity problem, however, it is going to take a concerted effort on the part of parents, schools and communities to make a difference.
